Mortgage Fraud

The economic crisis spawned many state and federal law enforcement initiatives, including the Maryland Mortgage Fraud Task Force, comprised of the United States Attorney’s Office, the state Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, the Office of the Attorney General, the Maryland Insurance Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Unsurprisingly, the creation of that task force has coincided with a significant increase in the number of federal mortgage fraud cases in Maryland and nationwide. All professionals in the mortgage industry, whether lenders, loan officers, mortgage brokers, document processors, or real estate agents, have increased potential to become subjects or targets of federal investigations. Moreover, many of those professionals and their companies will receive federal grand jury subpoenas.

Our lawyers have prosecuted and defended cases relating to mortgage flipping and mortgage fraud, and have the required experience to evaluate the government’s evidence and to best position their clients to minimize any criminal exposure. Given the government’s current interest in prosecuting mortgage-related cases, it is critical for mortgage and loan professionals to contact experienced criminal defense attorneys when first contacted by law enforcement agents.
